The Coasts of Nostalgia

The word “nostalgia”, when broken down to its Greek elements roughly translates to “coming home” (nostos) “sickness” or “pain” (algia).  This is a photograph taken from my last trip to Savannah, where I grew up.  More specifically, Tybee Island where I remember my parents sometimes taking me as a child.

My intent was to alter it in a fashion where it’s a little hazy, a little grainy, a little surreal.  Imperfect… like a memory.  But I also wanted to convey the effect the movement of time has on memory - a darkening from the ocean representative of time seemed to play well off of the birds’ flight, serving as an apt metaphor for a fleeting memory and perhaps our time on earth itself.

Hopefully this puts the photograph in a clearer context.

The Unlightable Being of Bearness

This bear was hanging out next door to my apartment with an expression very much in line with what you’d expect from a NYC street bear.
